‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,’ Pilot, like Balaam of old, prophesied in spite of himself. Involuntarily and unwittingly he witnessed to the truth. What he wrote, God had written first. As the jeering crowds read that placard they began to chant, ‘If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him; (Matt. 27:42, KJV). The Royal Conqueror, however, went on to victory. In apparent weakness and defeat, he reigned from his cross. He is the King of Israel, not just of the Jews, but of all who believe in him, the true Israel of God (Gal. 3:29; 6:16). Let the redeemed of the Lord say, ‘Thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel’, and let those letters stand forever: INRI.
